Stucco repair

Professional stucco repair for Phoenix homes

At Crash of Rhinos Painting, we don't just paint — we prepare your home for lasting results. For stucco homes across the Phoenix metro area, that means meticulous stucco repair and stem wall prep before we ever open a can of paint. It's one of the most critical parts of our prep process, and a big reason why our paint jobs look better and last longer.

Our process

How we repair stucco, step by step

Patching stucco is not one job — it is six. Here is what happens on your wall, in order, and why each step matters. Tap any photo to see it larger.

  1. 1

    Cut out the failure

Cracked and hollow stucco is ground and chipped back until only sound material is left. Painting over a loose edge just moves the problem a few months down the road.

  2. 2

Build it back with a scratch coat

The opening is filled with a base coat and scratched in so the next layer bonds to it. Depth gets rebuilt in coats, not filled flush in one pass.

  3. 3

    Match the texture by hand

The top coat is worked to match the surrounding wall — lace, sand, knockdown, or dash. This is the step that decides whether anyone can spot the repair afterward.

  4. 4

    Prime the patch

Fresh stucco is far more absorbent than the aged wall around it. Priming the repair evens out that absorption so the finish coat doesn't flash a different sheen over the patch.

  5. 5

    Wash the whole wall

Before any paint goes on, the exterior is power washed to strip chalk, dust, and cobwebs. Paint sticks to the wall, not to what's sitting on it.

  6. 6

    Paint two dry coats

The repaired wall is painted with two dry coats of exterior paint, so the patch and the original stucco end up the same color, sheen, and thickness.

FAQ

Common questions

Stucco repair is part of the prep on every exterior painting project we take on. We don't take stucco-only jobs — the repair and the finish coat need to be done together for the patch to disappear and the warranty to hold.
