From samples to digital renderings, how we help you find your home’s color

The outside of your house is a reflection of the many things inside: family, friends, hard work, strong values, memorable pasts, and eventful futures. This is why it should be treated with just as much love and care as any other part of your home.

Professional Color Service House PaintingOne essential element that displays the true personality of your home is the paint color. Find your home’s color with a simple process curated by the exterior paint experts at Crash of Rhinos Painting.

Keep reading for tips and advice from these color professionals to help you find the perfect exterior paint color in Phoenix for your stucco home.

1. An inspection can help us find your home’s color

Our quality exterior painting experts conduct a thorough inspection prior to providing a quote. Included in this careful inspection is a County Assessor’s home sketch.

In addition, an inspection video captures selected painting areas along with sections that may require further work.

2. Make your color choice count

The exterior paint color specialists at Crash of Rhinos Painting have a successful multistep system proven to find your home’s color effectively. Here’s how it works:

  • Step 1: Meet with the company’s professional paint advisor. This person will be the liaison between you and your HOA, providing you with a selection of validated color palettes.
  • Step 2: Digital renderings (photos of your current home) are utilized to provide a representation of how your chosen colors will look on your home.
  • Step 3: With the help of your professional paint advisor, you make your final color decision. The advisor will then work with the HOA to submit all paperwork.

3. Put some prep in your step

Thorough preparation leads to even better end results. You want a painting company that places value in doing prep work right.

All homes, especially stucco homes, need to be cleaned, properly repaired, and covered prior to painting. While this process may seem tedious, it ensures an even more beautiful outcome in the end. It also helps ensure that the paint is going to last longer.

4. Show your home some love

Why you should hire an experienced exterior house painting company

Maybe you can’t remember the last time your home’s exterior was painted. Or perhaps you can visibly see signs that your exterior paint is starting to flake and wear away.

Either way, Crash of Rhinos Painting recommends that you turn to experienced painters to handle the job for you rather than trying to handle the job yourself, no matter how simple the task might seem.

Here are some even more solid reasons to leave such a job to the experts.

Safety

One of the most essential things to consider with exterior painting is your general safety, and that’s even if you only have a single-story home. An experienced house painter has all the tools and equipment (including the right paint!), as well as the training necessary, to do the best job possible on your painting project, which means better results.

Experience and knowledge

While there might be plenty of tutorials available for a variety of tasks, nothing beats overall experience, which is exactly what the experienced Phoenix house painters at Crash of Rhinos have. That experience means a reduced chance of risk, as well as a final result that looks exemplary.

Slapping a few coats of paint on your home might seem easy enough, but you don’t want to find out the hard way just how much more difficult the job actually is.

Spot other issues

During the painting job, there might be issues on the outside of your home that need attention. Thanks to their experience, professional painters are able to quickly identify such issues and likely know exactly what they are as well as what to do about them.

Imagine doing a great job of painting your home’s exterior on your own only to later learn you have to re-do it to address something like damaged stucco.

Insurance

If you were to injure yourself while painting the outside of your home, your health insurance might take care of most of your medical bills, but your injuries could impact your ability to work, take care of your family, or enjoy your life. Professionals are insured, offering everyone peace of mind.

Here’s what makes our paint warranty policy different

At Crash of Rhinos Painting, we offer a seven-year paint warranty. It’s one of the things that makes us different.

In this blog, we’ll dive into just what makes our warranty special, and why an effective exterior painting warranty really matters to you as a homeowner—and says about the company.

To get started with Crash of Rhinos, schedule a free quote with us.

Pictured: Crash of Rhinos seven-year paint warranty certificate7 years, versus 2 years

The state of Arizona mandates that exterior painting companies have to provide at least a two-year warranty on their work.

That may not seem like much warranty, but many other companies tend to stay at 2-3 years, not expecting the layman to know just how long paint should last.

What does a paint warranty policy actually say?

The fewer years that are in the warranty, the less confident the painting company is in its prep work, its paint, or its quality assurance process. This makes sense: if a contractor knows that their paint actually only lasts five years, they’re not going to want to guarantee it for six. They’d be out of business!

Many exterior painters stick close to the two-year minimum for two reasons: first, because they aren’t obligated to offer more and, second, because they’re not confident in their products or services, or how their paint will stand up to a beating from Arizona’s sun and monsoon weather.

What our paint warranty says about us

In contrast, Crash of Rhinos offers a seven-year warranty on our exterior painting work. That’s five years above-and-beyond the minimum requirement.

Why? It’s because we know that our superior paint (Dunn-Edwards), thorough prep work, and careful quality assurance all add up to a home painting that is going to last for seven years or longer.

Oh, and here’s another thing:

Even if an exterior painting company offers a warranty—even a longer one—be sure to ask them just how much that warranty will cost. Many companies attract customers with generous warranties that they then upcharge people for when their service is complete.

Again, to contrast, our seven-year warranty comes with our service. No extra fees. No extra upcharge. In fact, it’s something that we lay out upfront in our proposal packet. It’s something that we feel customers deserve.

Choose Crash of Rhinos Painting

When it comes to exterior painting here in Phoenix, you have many choices. However, when it comes to great, customer-trusted exterior painting companies with an included, seven-year warranty, there’s really only one right choice: Crash of Rhinos Painting.

If your stucco home needs exterior painting, give us a call to schedule a free quote.

Here’s what our proposal folder contains

Getting your home painted is a big investment, and you want to know that it’ll be done the right way. At Crash of Rhinos, we create a detailed proposal folder for each and every job, because we want you to know ahead of time what you can expect from our team.

In this blog post, we’ll run through what our proposal folder actually contains, why it’s important, and—most importantly—what it looks like.

Every home painting job we do here in the Valley starts with a free inspection. To get started, contact our team for yours.

The 5 things our proposal folders contain

#1. Scope of work

Our scope of work contains a broad overview of the project, what we’ll be painting, and a breakdown of the process. We’ll also include a timeline for the work, and notes on what you can expect from us.

The scope of work will also contain information about our thorough prep process—something that we think makes-or-breaks an exterior paint job.

#2. Information about the paint

We’re proud to use high-quality Dunn-Edwards paint on every job we do. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for many other painting companies; they’ll often use “house” paint, which is often a blend of leftovers they can acquire on the cheap.

READ: 3 Telltale Signs Of Unprofessional Painters

Dunn-Edwards is specially formulated to handle the intense UV radiation we get here in Phoenix. It’s tough, durable, fade-resistant, safe, and it’s perfect for stucco homes. We’ll share more information about the paint in your packet.

#3. Notes about the warranty

Crash of Rhinos has an outstanding warranty. Exterior painting companies are required by the state of Arizona to provide a 2-year warranty on their work. Other companies typically stick to that.

Not us. We offer a 7-year warranty on our exterior paint. We’re able to do this because of the high-quality paint we use and our superior prep process—which helps the paint better adhere to your walls.

All of the details about our warranty—including how to use it if your paint starts to fade—is included in our proposal folder.

#4. Insurance documentation

Never hire an exterior home painter who isn’t licensed, bonded, and insured. An uninsured painter or uninsured company is a major liability for you and your home. If the worker is injured on the job, they can come after you, the client! If the worker breaks something, or makes a mistake, there’s nothing to protect your property.

Worse yet, some home painters will tell you they’re insured, but not back it up with documents. But, unless you ask for proof and they provide it, you can never be really sure if that insurance is up-to-date, what exactly it covers, or if it’s even real.

Of course, we’re fully protected and insured—including with workman’s comp—for your protection and ours. In our packet, we’ll include documented proof of our insurance policies.

#5. Detailed contract

Finally, our proposal folder contains a detailed contract that breaks down what everything costs, what you’ll be getting, and more.

If you’re happy with everything else in the proposal, and you’re ready to get started, complete the contract and send it back to us.

From there, we’ll get in touch with you and make arrangements to get started with either our professional color consultation or, should the color already be known, our prep work.

Why color match isn’t really a thing for your home’s exterior paint

There are many exterior painting companies that note their ability to “match” your home’s current exterior paint color. Using software or their expertise, they promise a color match for your new paint.

This is really appealing to many homeowners who like their home’s current color or what they remember it was like before fading. Plus, they know that the color is already HOA-approved. Color match promises to be the equivalent of keeping the status quo. It’s an attractive option for many homeowners.

However, it’s actually far more complicated than that. There are a number of factors that make exact color matching nearly impossible.

Your memory works against you

Human memory is tricky, especially when trying to recall an precise detail about something that you see every single day looked like years ago. You may remember loving the exterior color of your home when it was first painted, but after years of it ever-so-slightly fading with each day of UV exposure, do you really remember the color correctly?

There have been situations where homeowners have us paint their home the exact color that they used a decade or two before, and they ended up hating the color after seeing it again. It’s often because the paint is more vibrant and less faded than their current faded paint color.

That exact color may not be available

With the right prep work and expertise, your home’s exterior paint should last for years to come. That means a long time passes between paintings. Paint companies phase out products regularly, so it’s very possible that the paint once used on your home is no longer available.

This is especially true of new home construction that is now receiving its first post-construction painting. Homebuilders tend to use lower-grade paint (in contrast to the Dunn-Edwards paint we use) to save money, which means finding that paint again can be even more difficult. That’s even if your homebuilder took notes on the color of paint used on your home.

Same color, different results

Even if you’ve found the exact same color of paint, from the exact same manufacturer (and they haven’t changed the formula), there’s a chance that your new exterior paint will look different. That’s because process matters.

At Crash of Rhinos, we do a lot of prep work for stucco and use a thorough two-coat process on homes. This, in turn, makes paint more vibrant (and likelier to last) than a house painter that slaps on one coat and calls it a day.

Professional Color Service House PaintingOur advice: love your new paint

Even if you really like the current paint color of your home, embrace the idea that your new exterior paint isn’t going to be an exact copy. Work on finding a color that you love because it looks great, not because it’s a perfect match.

As we’ve discussed, a color match can only get you into the general ballpark. If you go into your home painting process expecting an exact match, you’re probably setting yourself up for disappointment.

Schedule a color consultation with Crash of Rhinos

There are two ways to pick your home’s exterior paint colors. For an additional charge, we offer one-on-one consulting with our Professional Paint Advisor. With this service, our advisor will meet with you at your home and help you select the right color. This process includes digital renderings, and we’ll help you work with your HOA on finding compliant colors.

Why stucco repair is such an important part of our prep work

At Crash of Rhinos Painting, we specialize in exterior home painting for stucco homes here in the Phoenix metro area. Completely exposed to the elements, your home’s stucco exterior can take a beating over the years. That’s why an essential part of our prep work involves stucco repair and stem wall scraping.

In this blog post, we’ll run through just some of the reasons that stucco repair is the most important part of our prep work, and what this does for your home. It’s just one of the reasons that Crash of Rhinos is one of the most trusted exterior painting businesses in Phoenix.

Get a free estimate from our team by contacting us today!

Why does stucco repair matter so much?

stucco repair on Phoenix homesStucco is one of the preferred materials for building homes here in the Valley, mainly because our arid climate and low-clay soil negates some of its downsides—mainly, that stucco doesn’t do well with shifting earth beneath it. It’s durable and matches the look of many neighborhoods.

Yet, stucco is not impenetrable. Here are some of the reasons Crash of Rhinos repairs your stucco before painting it:

1. Your stucco home is under attack—constantly

This may sound melodramatic, but it’s true: your stucco is constantly being bombarded by the sun, wind, rain, and other natural elements. Our Phoenix climate can be tough on just about everything, and that goes double for the exterior of your home. Even woodpeckers take shots at it. Finally, as your home settles over time, cracks can appear in stucco.

In addition to making your home look unappealing, such damage to stucco can eventually lead to the failure of the stucco exterior. But, for our purposes, there’s something else: painting over damaged stucco is not going to turn out right. Let’s explain why.

2. Stucco in good condition ensures a smooth finish

Our job is to leave you with a stunning exterior painting job. To do so, we need to smooth over and repair any hairline fractures, holes, or other damage to the stucco walls we’ll be painting.

Think about it: if you were painting the walls of your living room, not fixing damage to the walls first would result in weird splotching and shadows. It’d look terrible. Same goes for your home’s exterior. Any exterior painting company that doesn’t do stucco repair first is asking for trouble.

Of course, that’s just one of the things we do for prep work. But, given that stucco is the canvas we work with, you could argue that it’s one of the most essential things we do.

3. Better stucco = longer-lasting exterior paint

A poor canvas makes for a poor painting. But, failure to properly prepare a home’s stucco exterior prior to painting can have another consequence: it could lead to the paint wearing faster or peeling, meaning that you’d need another painting sooner than you should.

Under Arizona state law, exterior home painters are required to offer homeowners a two-year warranty on their work. In our view, that’s not long enough. We place a seven-year warranty on the homes we paint.

Part of the reason? We’re confident in our prep work, painting process, and the high-quality paint we use. We do things right so that your home is painted to last.

4. Improves your home’s value on the market

A lot of the homeowners we work with have us repaint their homes specifically because they’re thinking about putting them on the market, either immediately or in the near future. It’s a good call: exterior home painting can drastically increase the curb appeal and value of your home.

Here in Phoenix, effective stucco repair is another great selling point. It puts the buyer’s mind at ease to know that there are no issues with the exterior of the home, and conveys that your home has been well-cared for.

Here’s how exterior home painting can positively impact your home value

The first impression might not be the last impression, but there is no denying the fact that it matters a ton in the world of home selling and home buying. The exterior is the first thing the prospective buyer sees, and therefore it might be the thing that has the most impact on your home value.

Pictured: Two hands forming a picture frame around a freshly painted house from the street, indicating that the home value of the home has been increased by exterior home painting. If you’re looking to sell your home, having the Crash of Rhinos team paint the exterior can help you to increase the market value of your home and get a sale done faster.

In this blog post, we review how exterior paint can impact your home value.

#1. New paint helps highlight architectural details

Fresh exterior home painting can do a great job of highlighting the architectural features of the exterior. If your house exterior doesn’t have same details throughout, then exterior home painting can also be used to balance those details.

Not sure what to highlight? With our professional paint advisor services, our team will help you find the right paint color for your home that matches the standards and rules of your HOA.

#2. Exterior home painting gets you return on investment

If we talk about other home renovations, then you can easily notice that every single one of them will cost you a lot of money. For instance, if you spend $5000 dollars on renovating your bathrooms, then there are very less chances that you will get a positive return on investment.

However, if you spend even a small amount on your exterior home painting, you’re more likely to get a higher return on investment on this expense. Why? Because exterior home painting conveys a lot about your home to those passing buy and “window-shopping” for a new home.

#3. Paint can be a protective shield against the elements

We know that rain and wind are rough on our homes. For instance, strong winds, heavy rains, hailstorm, and even just the everyday Phoenix sunshine can all take a toll on the exterior of your house.

Having a quality paint job can act as a protective shield for the exterior of the house. If you’ve been thinking about selling your home—or you’re currently trying to sell—an exterior paint job might be the right strategic decision.

Crash of Rhinos offers a 7-year warranty

By Arizona law, exterior painting contractors and companies are only required to offer a 2-year warranty to customers. Many of them do just that, and—thanks to their haste to get the job done—skip the quality assurance steps that make exterior paint last. The result is that customers are stuck having to pay for another exterior painting job only 5 years after the original one.

7-year warranty

A Crash of Rhinos painter pressure washes a home prior to painting. This is a critical step in ensuring that paint lasts for years to come.

At Crash of Rhinos, we do things differently. By offering a 7-year warranty, we more than double the legal requirement and give you fantastic value and peace of mind for your money. In this post, we’ll explain why we’re able to offer such an extensive warranty and why Arizona homes need this kind of protection.

How is Crash able to offer a 7-year warranty?

When you use the best quality paints and do proper preparation, an exterior paint job should last for years to come—even under the strain of Arizona’s brutal sun. Crash of Rhinos Painting uses specially formulated Dunn-Edwards paints that are designed to be UV and water-resistant. This means that the paint retains its color and wall-surface binding for longer, and is less likely to collect dirt, grow mildew, or have chalking issues.

However, even the best paint is worthless without proper preparation on the part of the painters. Besides protecting your property, a good painting company like Crash of Rhinos should take the following steps to ensure that the surface is ready for painting:

  • Pressure washing, to ensure that any existing paint, direct, pollutants, and chalking is removed.
  • Stucco and drywall repair, so that the painting surface is consistent and there aren’t damaged spots.
  • Scraping and application of DRYLOK, so that the stem walls are water resistant and won’t take in extra moisture.
  • Primer, so that the paint has something to adhere to. This is one of the most important steps in the exterior painting process.

Why do I need a longer warranty?

Arizona is one of the sunniest states in the nation, with a vast majority of days bringing high UV exposure. This constant sunshine can, over time, put pressure on the exterior paint of homes, eventually leading to discoloration, fading, and chalking. That’s not to mention other factors, including the torrential rain and dust storms that arrive in Phoenix’s late summer monsoon season. All things considered, the exteriors of Arizona homes take a beating over the course of a year.

A 7-year warranty helps protect your painting investment for longer. Thanks to our extensive preparation process, your exterior paint may last longer than that, but we want to make sure you’re at least covered through those years.

What else makes Crash of Rhinos different?

When you hire Crash of Rhinos, you’re getting quality work from a licensed, bonded, and insured company. We offer a free quote on our services, and we work with your HOA on your behalf to find compatible color options. From start to finish, our painting process has multiple quality assurance checks.

What should you expect from the exterior paint used on your home?

“It’s just paint. How complicated could paint be?” Many people think that the exterior paint type used on their home doesn’t matter as much as the color, or the quality of the work put into painting. While those people are not completely wrong—Crash of Rhinos does offer great service and color consultation, after all—we’d ask them to reconsider the unsung hero of the exterior painting process: the paint itself.

Here are some things you should consider when selecting a painting company. Crash of Rhinos uses Dunn-Edwards paints because we believe they offer exceptional quality that is tailor-made for the conditions here in Phoenix and the Southwest. Ask if your paint is the following:

It has to be built tough

Phoenix Home PaintingIf it’s going to last for years to come, the exterior paint on your home needs to be tough enough to stand up to the sun. In Phoenix, we enjoy beautiful sunshine for 85 percent of the year. All those rays are great for your personal sun tan, but your home takes in a tremendous amount of UV in the summer. It also gets hit by late summer dust storms, monsoon moisture, and high winds.

If your paint isn’t made with these things in mind, it’s going to start wearing down long before it should.

It should stand on its own

Besides being able to resist wear-and-tear from sun, wind, and rain, your exterior paint needs to be mildew-resistant and durable, so that you don’t have cracking or peeling paint. The advantage of picking a paint with extra binding by default is that it sticks better to a professionally prepared exterior wall surface, and is less likely to have problems down the road.

Finally, you’ve done your homework to pick the perfect color for your home. The last thing you want is for that color to fade only years after the paint is applied. Pick an exterior paint that is fade-resistant.

It should be safe for your family and the environment

Unfortunately, paint is not always created with the best ingredients. Some paint formulas use chemicals that negatively impact human health and the surrounding environment, and are created in factories that emit those same pollutants into the atmosphere.

You have a choice in your home’s paint, so select one that is free of ethylene glycol and has no VOC colorants.

We use Dunn-Edwards exterior paint

Exterior Paint ApplicationCrash of Rhinos Painting is a proud partner of Dunn-Edwards Paints. Since 1925, Dunn-Edwards has been the best paint manufacturer in the U.S. Southwest, and has created formulas specifically designed to stand up to the intense sunshine we receive here. Because of this, their paints are designed to last 10-15 years without fading—far longer than most paints.

Plus, Dunn-Edwards is committed to environmental sustainability, starting with the world’s first LEED Gold paint manufacturing facility—located right here in Phoenix. We stand by Dunn-Edwards paints, and we’re proud to use them on all of our exterior painting work.

Step #1: Choosing a quality paint

Before you can even start to think about colors, you really need to think about the paint itself. Too many homeowners we talk to think that all paint is the same. Trust us, your local painters: it’s not, and picking the wrong type or brand of paint could lead to future headaches.

For example, some brands of paint are perfect for places like Boston or Seattle, where summer temperatures are mild and days are overcast. Those paints don’t do so well, however, here in Phoenix, where the scorching sun bakes the paint and it’s exposed to sunshine almost every day of the year.

There are three things people should think about when it comes to paint:

Ease of application

Some paints provide full cover after just one coat, while others require several coats in order to be fully applied. The difference is in the quality of the pigments they contain. Choosing a paint containing the proper pigments will save you on the amount of paint used.

Durability

The next concern is how long the paint is going to last. The solids (the remains on the wall after the paint has dried) play a major role in the durability of the paint. The higher percentage of solids there is (over 45% is better), the more dense and durable the coating.

Resistance to climate

Dunn Edwards PaintThe change of seasons, such as from summer to winter, may cause some serious problems to the exterior of your home if the paint is not of the right quality.

The paints which have a capability to endure these kinds of weather changes are the ones with an all-acrylic binder. The binder is what holds the pigments together and provides the right protection from the outside environment.

(If all this paint jargon is too much, check out this useful glossary from Dunn-Edwards!)

We’re proud to be your local painters and we use Dunn-Edwards

At Crash of Rhinos, we use Dunn-Edwards paints because it meets or exceeds the three standards listed above. Unlike some paints, Dunn-Edwards is specially formulated to stand up to lots of sunshine and heat. It’s perfect for the exterior of stucco homes here in Phoenix.

Step #2: Rule out colors that aren’t the right fit

Consider what won’t be changing about your home’s exterior

Pictured: Local painters advise you work around the stone features of a home like this.

Pay attention to elements like the roof, the chimney, the driveway ,and any stone and brick features on your home that won’t be painted. What color are they? Their color should play a determining role in your choice of colors.

For example, if a part of the façade is made of stone, use a similar color, so that you can achieve visual harmony.

If the roof has an intense color (like terra-cotta), choose a more neutral color for the exterior. Be careful not to accent any unappealing elements like the downspouts or the air conditioners.

Pay attention to the landscaping

The landscape and the surroundings of your house can have great influence on what your exterior color looks like. Do you have trees with colorful blossoms, flowering shrubs or green plantings? Their color may have a beautiful impact on your exterior.

What does your HOA allow?

If your neighborhood has an HOA, you should start by finding out what colors they allow you to paint your house. The last thing you want to do is have your local painters finish up the work, only to get slapped with a non-compliance fine from your association.

Ok, but where to start? You don’t even know who runs the HOA! With Crash of Rhinos’ professional paint advisor services, we make this easy. We handle communicating with your HOA for you. We’ll find out the allowed colors and present them to you as options.

Here in Phoenix, historic homes don’t have restrictions on the color they can be painted, unless otherwise regulated by an HOA. Still, the city’s Historic Preservation Office has some tips for selecting a color and treatment.

Speaking of unique neighborhoods…

Even if you don’t have an HOA, don’t ignore the neighboring homes

Not having an HOA may seem like a green light to paint your home neon orange, but you should also think about what fits the neighborhood. Even if you love neon orange, no one is going to buy such an eyesore—and your neighbors will probably stop inviting you to the block party out of pure hatred! (Read more on how paint impacts home values)

Look for an already established color pattern in the neighborhood. You don’t need to imitate the exact colors used by your neighbors. You just need to be in the same ballpark. Crash of Rhinos can help you find similar colors that give your home its individual style.

By doing this, your local painters will help your house blend in with the neighborhood while still preserving your right to paint your house in a color or shade that you like.

Step #3: Hire local painters who help you visualize the color

Ok, so you’ve now ruled out many colors, and you’re down to your top 3. Great! Now, how do you know which color will look right on the exterior of your home?

That’s where we come in. Our professional paint advisor services can help you select the right color by:

  1. Getting color palettes for you to review
  2. Preparing digital renderings for you to review
  3. Testing a swatch on your home’s exterior.

exterior-house-painters-Phoenix

Preparing color palettes

We’ll only present you with colors that are in compliance with the rules of your HOA and match what you’re interested in, as well as the colors of the neighborhood. This will help you narrow down which color you want to try out.

Seeing a digital preview

As part of every free estimate we provide, we take pictures of your home that can be later used to create real-to-life digital renderings of your home and what it will look like painted.

These digital renderings can help you further narrow down your color choices, or even fall in love with a particular color. But, they’re no substitute for…

Seeing what it looks like in the real world

As part of your consultation, Crash of Rhinos can paint a test swatch on your home, somewhere inconspicuous. This swatch of color will help you see what the color looks like in “real life” and in realistic lighting conditions. After all, one color can look different in the bright light of morning than it does in the shadows of the late afternoon.

Step #4: Make your final selection and let your local painters get to work!

Once you’ve picked your favorite paint color, it’s time for the Crash of Rhinos team to take things from there! With our thorough painting process, your new favorite color will be on your home’s exterior in no time.
