From samples to digital renderings, how we help you find your home’s color

The outside of your house is a reflection of the many things inside: family, friends, hard work, strong values, memorable pasts, and eventful futures. This is why it should be treated with just as much love and care as any other part of your home.

Professional Color Service House PaintingOne essential element that displays the true personality of your home is the paint color. Find your home’s color with a simple process curated by the exterior paint experts at Crash of Rhinos Painting.

Keep reading for tips and advice from these color professionals to help you find the perfect exterior paint color in Phoenix for your stucco home.

1. An inspection can help us find your home’s color

Our quality exterior painting experts conduct a thorough inspection prior to providing a quote. Included in this careful inspection is a County Assessor’s home sketch.

In addition, an inspection video captures selected painting areas along with sections that may require further work.

2. Make your color choice count

The exterior paint color specialists at Crash of Rhinos Painting have a successful multistep system proven to find your home’s color effectively. Here’s how it works:

  • Step 1: Meet with the company’s professional color consultant. This person will be the liaison between you and your HOA, providing you with a selection of validated color palettes.
  • Step 2: Digital renderings (photos of your current home) are utilized to provide a representation of how your chosen colors will look on your home.
  • Step 3: With the help of your professional color consultant, you make your final color decision. The consultant will then work with the HOA to submit all paperwork.

3. Put some prep in your step

Thorough preparation leads to even better end results. You want a painting company that places value in doing prep work right.

All homes, especially stucco homes, need to be cleaned, properly repaired, and covered prior to painting. While this process may seem tedious, it ensures an even more beautiful outcome in the end. It also helps ensure that the paint is going to last longer.

4. Show your home some love

A walkthrough of Crash of Rhinos’ communication process

Communication is the key to building trust in any relationship, business or otherwise. At Crash of Rhinos Painting, we’ve put together a painting communication process that ensures that you are never in the dark.

In the interest of making sure you’re informed, we’re going to walk you through the process step-by-step so you know what to expect when you work with us.

To get a free exterior painting quote, contact us today.

Here’s how our communication process works:

1. In-person inspection

The process begins with one of our trained professionals coming to your house to conduct an in-person inspection. We will make a video recording of your entire property to identify any problems or issues that we will have to address while painting your home.

2. Proposal folder presentation

Immediately after the inspection is completed, our professional will put together a proposal folder and go over it with you. This information includes information about the job to be done, including the cost, the paint we’ll be using, and the overall scope of the job, as well as information about our insurance documentation and details of our 7-year warranty.

3. Questions and contract

Our technician will go over the folder with you, including a detailed contract, and answer any questions that you may have. The contract is included in the folder, but you needn’t sign it before the technician leaves. Take the time you need to go over the proposal, then sign and send it to us once you’re satisfied with what we offer.

4. Professional color consultation

If you haven’t yet decided on the color that you want for your house’s exterior, the next step in the communication process is a color consultation with one of our professional color consultants. This involves digital renderings that will give you a good idea of what your home will look like at the completion of the project.

5. Progress reports on a daily basis

As a homeowner, you should never feel out-of-the-loop about what’s being done on your propertyThat’s why we follow up with our customers every day to keep them informed of what we plan to work on during any given day, as well as updates on what we’ve already accomplished.

Your home’s outer appearance says a lot about its character, and that’s why it’s important to work with an exterior painting company you can trust. Crash of Rhinos’ communication process fosters that trust by walking with you every step of the way. Contact us today to start the process.

Why you should hire an experienced exterior house painting company

Maybe you can’t remember the last time your home’s exterior was painted. Or perhaps you can visibly see signs that your exterior paint is starting to flake and wear away.

Either way, Crash of Rhinos Painting recommends that you turn to experienced painters to handle the job for you rather than trying to handle the job yourself, no matter how simple the task might seem.

Here are some even more solid reasons to leave such a job to the experts.

Safety

One of the most essential things to consider with exterior painting is your general safety, and that’s even if you only have a single-story home. An experienced house painter has all the tools and equipment (including the right paint!), as well as the training necessary, to do the best job possible on your painting project, which means better results.

Experience and knowledge

While there might be plenty of tutorials available for a variety of tasks, nothing beats overall experience, which is exactly what the experienced Phoenix house painters at Crash of Rhinos have. That experience means a reduced chance of risk, as well as a final result that looks exemplary.

Slapping a few coats of paint on your home might seem easy enough, but you don’t want to find out the hard way just how much more difficult the job actually is.

Spot other issues

During the painting job, there might be issues on the outside of your home that need attention. Thanks to their experience, professional painters are able to quickly identify such issues and likely know exactly what they are as well as what to do about them.

Imagine doing a great job of painting your home’s exterior on your own only to later learn you have to re-do it to address something like damaged stucco.

Insurance

If you were to injure yourself while painting the outside of your home, your health insurance might take care of most of your medical bills, but your injuries could impact your ability to work, take care of your family, or enjoy your life. Professionals are insured, offering everyone peace of mind.

Here’s what our proposal folder contains

Getting your home painted is a big investment, and you want to know that it’ll be done the right way. At Crash of Rhinos, we create a detailed proposal folder for each and every job, because we want you to know ahead of time what you can expect from our team.

In this blog post, we’ll run through what our proposal folder actually contains, why it’s important, and—most importantly—what it looks like.

Every home painting job we do here in the Valley starts with a free inspection. To get started, contact our team for yours.

The 5 things our proposal folders contain

#1. Scope of work

Our scope of work contains a broad overview of the project, what we’ll be painting, and a breakdown of the process. We’ll also include a timeline for the work, and notes on what you can expect from us.

The scope of work will also contain information about our thorough prep process—something that we think makes-or-breaks an exterior paint job.

#2. Information about the paint

We’re proud to use high-quality Dunn-Edwards paint on every job we do. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for many other painting companies; they’ll often use “house” paint, which is often a blend of leftovers they can acquire on the cheap.

READ: 3 Telltale Signs Of Unprofessional Painters

Dunn-Edwards is specially formulated to handle the intense UV radiation we get here in Phoenix. It’s tough, durable, fade-resistant, safe, and it’s perfect for stucco homes. We’ll share more information about the paint in your packet.

#3. Notes about the warranty

Crash of Rhinos has an outstanding warranty. Exterior painting companies are required by the state of Arizona to provide a 2-year warranty on their work. Other companies typically stick to that.

Not us. We offer a 7-year warranty on our exterior paint. We’re able to do this because of the high-quality paint we use and our superior prep process—which helps the paint better adhere to your walls.

All of the details about our warranty—including how to use it if your paint starts to fade—is included in our proposal folder.

#4. Insurance documentation

Never hire an exterior home painter who isn’t licensed, bonded, and insured. An uninsured painter or uninsured company is a major liability for you and your home. If the worker is injured on the job, they can come after you, the client! If the worker breaks something, or makes a mistake, there’s nothing to protect your property.

Worse yet, some home painters will tell you they’re insured, but not back it up with documents. But, unless you ask for proof and they provide it, you can never be really sure if that insurance is up-to-date, what exactly it covers, or if it’s even real.

Of course, we’re fully protected and insured—including with workman’s comp—for your protection and ours. In our packet, we’ll include documented proof of our insurance policies.

#5. Detailed contract

Finally, our proposal folder contains a detailed contract that breaks down what everything costs, what you’ll be getting, and more.

If you’re happy with everything else in the proposal, and you’re ready to get started, complete the contract and send it back to us.

From there, we’ll get in touch with you and make arrangements to get started with either our professional color consultation or, should the color already be known, our prep work.

Here are three telltale signs of an unprofessional exterior painting job

Unprofessional Paint JobUnfortunately, the reality is that not everyone works hard for their buck. A number of unprofessional painters try to dupe people by carrying out a low-grade exterior painting job.

The problem is that on the surface it will look like that they have done a good job. But once the paint starts to peel, after a short time, you will realize that you have been deceived by the painter.

While it’s not possible to know for sure about poor quality paintwork, there are certain telltale signs that will indicate to you of an unprofessional paint job.

1. Air holes

Tiny air holes that appear on the wall are a clear sign of an unprofessional paint work. The holes generally appear when too few coats of the paint are applied. The tiny air holes will pop and expose the bare walls. To avoid this situation, make sure that the painter applies more than one coat of paint and doesn’t cut corners with the work.

2. Cracking or peeling

A cracked or peeled paint is another sign of a poor paint job. This usually occurs when the painter mixes the paint with 25 to 50 percent water. This is a little hard to catch as the paint will start to peel after a month or more of application of the paint. However, ask what kind of paint your painter is using. Crash of Rhinos, for instance, uses 100% genuine Dunn-Edwards paint built for the Arizona sun.

3. Blisters on the walls

Blisters can appear after immediately or the next day of application of a fresh coat of paint. These blisters can dry and crack exposing the bare wall. Mostly blisters appear because the paint was contaminated with oil or dust. Also, old paint results in the appearance of blisters on the walls.

Hire trained, experienced painters from the start!

The above are just some of the telltale signs indicating that the house paint has not been done professionally. In case you detect any of the above problems after the painter has finished painting the house, you should immediately contact the painter who had performed the shady work and ask to repaint or refund you the money.

Also, it helps if you hire professionally trained painters from the start, like those here at Crash of Rhinos Painting. The painter that you hire for the house paint should have the required credentials and experience to perform a high-quality job. This will reduce the risk of an unprofessional exterior painting job.

Step #1: Choosing a quality paint

Before you can even start to think about colors, you really need to think about the paint itself. Too many homeowners we talk to think that all paint is the same. Trust us, your local painters: it’s not, and picking the wrong type or brand of paint could lead to future headaches.

For example, some brands of paint are perfect for places like Boston or Seattle, where summer temperatures are mild and days are overcast. Those paints don’t do so well, however, here in Phoenix, where the scorching sun bakes the paint and it’s exposed to sunshine almost every day of the year.

There are three things people should think about when it comes to paint:

Ease of application

Some paints provide full cover after just one coat, while others require several coats in order to be fully applied. The difference is in the quality of the pigments they contain. Choosing a paint containing the proper pigments will save you on the amount of paint used.

Durability

The next concern is how long the paint is going to last. The solids (the remains on the wall after the paint has dried) play a major role in the durability of the paint. The higher percentage of solids there is (over 45% is better), the more dense and durable the coating.

Resistance to climate

Dunn Edwards PaintThe change of seasons, such as from summer to winter, may cause some serious problems to the exterior of your home if the paint is not of the right quality.

The paints which have a capability to endure these kinds of weather changes are the ones with an all-acrylic binder. The binder is what holds the pigments together and provides the right protection from the outside environment.

(If all this paint jargon is too much, check out this useful glossary from Dunn-Edwards!)

We’re proud to be your local painters and we use Dunn-Edwards

At Crash of Rhinos, we use Dunn-Edwards paints because it meets or exceeds the three standards listed above. Unlike some paints, Dunn-Edwards is specially formulated to stand up to lots of sunshine and heat. It’s perfect for the exterior of stucco homes here in Phoenix.

Step #2: Rule out colors that aren’t the right fit

Consider what won’t be changing about your home’s exterior

Pictured: Local painters advise you work around the stone features of a home like this.

Pay attention to elements like the roof, the chimney, the driveway ,and any stone and brick features on your home that won’t be painted. What color are they? Their color should play a determining role in your choice of colors.

For example, if a part of the façade is made of stone, use a similar color, so that you can achieve visual harmony.

If the roof has an intense color (like terra-cotta), choose a more neutral color for the exterior. Be careful not to accent any unappealing elements like the downspouts or the air conditioners.

Pay attention to the landscaping

The landscape and the surroundings of your house can have great influence on what your exterior color looks like. Do you have trees with colorful blossoms, flowering shrubs or green plantings? Their color may have a beautiful impact on your exterior.

What does your HOA allow?

If your neighborhood has an HOA, you should start by finding out what colors they allow you to paint your house. The last thing you want to do is have your local painters finish up the work, only to get slapped with a non-compliance fine from your association.

Ok, but where to start? You don’t even know who runs the HOA! With Crash of Rhinos’ professional paint advisor services, we make this easy. We handle communicating with your HOA for you. We’ll find out the allowed colors and present them to you as options.

Here in Phoenix, historic homes don’t have restrictions on the color they can be painted, unless otherwise regulated by an HOA. Still, the city’s Historic Preservation Office has some tips for selecting a color and treatment.

Speaking of unique neighborhoods…

Even if you don’t have an HOA, don’t ignore the neighboring homes

Not having an HOA may seem like a green light to paint your home neon orange, but you should also think about what fits the neighborhood. Even if you love neon orange, no one is going to buy such an eyesore—and your neighbors will probably stop inviting you to the block party out of pure hatred! (Read more on how paint impacts home values)

Look for an already established color pattern in the neighborhood. You don’t need to imitate the exact colors used by your neighbors. You just need to be in the same ballpark. Crash of Rhinos can help you find similar colors that give your home its individual style.

By doing this, your local painters will help your house blend in with the neighborhood while still preserving your right to paint your house in a color or shade that you like.

Step #3: Hire local painters who help you visualize the color

Ok, so you’ve now ruled out many colors, and you’re down to your top 3. Great! Now, how do you know which color will look right on the exterior of your home?

That’s where we come in. Our professional paint advisor services can help you select the right color by:

  1. Getting color palettes for you to review
  2. Preparing digital renderings for you to review
  3. Testing a swatch on your home’s exterior.

Preparing color palettes

We’ll only present you with colors that are in compliance with the rules of your HOA and match what you’re interested in, as well as the colors of the neighborhood. This will help you narrow down which color you want to try out.

Seeing a digital preview

As part of every free estimate we provide, we take pictures of your home that can be later used to create real-to-life digital renderings of your home and what it will look like painted.

These digital renderings can help you further narrow down your color choices, or even fall in love with a particular color. But, they’re no substitute for…

Seeing what it looks like in the real world

As part of your consultation, Crash of Rhinos can paint a test swatch on your home, somewhere inconspicuous. This swatch of color will help you see what the color looks like in “real life” and in realistic lighting conditions. After all, one color can look different in the bright light of morning than it does in the shadows of the late afternoon.

Step #4: Make your final selection and let your local painters get to work!

Once you’ve picked your favorite paint color, it’s time for the Crash of Rhinos team to take things from there! With our thorough painting process, your new favorite color will be on your home’s exterior in no time.
