Latex is usually recommended for most interior painting since it dries quickly and cleans up easily with soap and water while oil -based paints usually take 24 hours to dry and cleanup requires turpentine and paint thinner.
• Buy your supplies. In addition to the paint material, you may need some tools to continue the painting job. This includes primer, spackling compound, putty knife, caulking , sponge, sandpaper, tack clothes and damp rags, TSP ( tri-sodium phosphate) to clean the walls, drop cloths, rubber gloves, painter’s tape, pain trays and liners, variety sizes of paintbrushes, paint rollers, extension pole, multi purpose ( 5-in-1) painter’s tool, paint edger, painter’s shield, ladder etc.
• Prepare to paint. This step involves moving the furniture out of the room, removal of items such as switch plates, outlet and phone jack covers, hardware and curtains. You also need to place drop cloths on the floor, caulk gaps around windows and floors, fill in nail holes, cracks, dents and other uneven spots with spackling compound and putty knife. Make sure to clean surfaces and tape around windows, doors, baseboards and other items that you don’t want to paint. You will also need to do priming when necessary.
• Stir the paint and get to work. Most painting pros suggest doing the job in this order - ceiling, walls, windows, doors and trim.
• Allow the paint dry completely before continuing. Do not be in a rush. Usually, if you use latex paint, this will take three to four hours to dry. If necessary, you may add a second coat of paint once the first coat is dry.
